Safety & Climate by Season
Where petty crime actually concentrates, how climate splits by region, and the honest wildfire and earthquake context.
Crime pattern, specifically
- The real picture : violent crime is low nationally; petty theft concentrates in specific tourist zones : central Lisbon tram lines, Algarve resort parking areas : not as a general ambient risk.
- Practical habits : bag-forward on Lisbon's Tram 28, and don't leave anything visible in a parked car near Algarve beach trailheads : the two patterns worth actually knowing.
Climate isn't one thing
- Lisbon coast : mild, moderate year-round, the closest to "postcard Portugal weather."
- The Algarve : hot, dry summers with heavy July–August tourist crowding; the mildest winters in the country.
- Porto & the north : wetter, cooler, real seasons : closer to a Pacific Northwest feel than to the south.
- The interior / Alentejo : continental extremes : colder winters and hotter summers than the coast, which surprises people who pictured one uniform "Portugal climate."
Wildfire and earthquake, honestly
- Wildfire : real and seasonal in interior/forested regions during summer and early fall, essentially a non-factor directly on the coast.
- Earthquake : Lisbon has real seismic history (the 1755 earthquake reshaped the city); modern building codes reflect it, and it's worth knowing rather than being surprised by later.
