• Direct US routes: confirmed nonstop service includes Miami, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Boston, New York (JFK), Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Atlanta, Chicago O'Hare, Los Angeles, Washington Dulles, Las Vegas, Austin, and Baltimore-Washington, among others.
• Realistic flight times: Panama City to Miami runs about 3 hours nonstop; Houston is closer to 4.5 hours. Both are meaningfully shorter than a transatlantic flight to Portugal, a real quality-of-life difference for how often family can realistically visit, and how often you can go back.

The timezone advantage

Panama sits at a fixed UTC-5 all year and has not observed daylight saving time since 1908. In practice, that means it matches US Eastern Standard Time exactly through the winter months, and matches US Central Time during the months the US observes daylight saving, since Eastern shifts to UTC-4 but Panama doesn't move at all. Either way, the gap from most of the continental US tops out at one hour, nothing close to the 5-6 hour gap a European retirement destination creates.

• What it actually changes: a phone or video call with grandkids doesn't require either side to plan around a big time difference, and a flight home doesn't come with the multi-day adjustment a transatlantic trip does.
