Food & Daily Rhythm

What groceries actually cost, the mercato habit that becomes a real daily-life ritual, and why the whole town closes at 1pm.

Where to shop, and what it costs

  • Standard supermarket: a single person shopping at Esselunga, Coop or Conad spends roughly €250-350/month on groceries; a couple leaning more on markets can land closer to €200-300 each.
  • Cheaper still: Eurospin, Lidl and In's Mercato consistently undercut the standard chains.
  • The mercato habit: the open-air or covered municipal market (il mercato) isn't a novelty, it's where produce, meat and cheese are genuinely fresher and cheaper than the supermarket, and where a real daily-life rhythm gets built: going near closing time for better prices, recognizing which vendor to trust, becoming a regular.

Eating out economics

  • Trattoria dinner: €22-40/person for two courses and house wine; a pizza at a local pizzeria runs €5-12.
  • Aperitivo: a spritz plus snacks for roughly €3-8 during early-evening aperitivo hour functions as a genuinely cheap light dinner substitute, and a real social ritual, not just a drink.
  • A realistic budget day: bar breakfast, a fixed-price lunch menu, and a modest dinner can run €20-30/day total in a non-tourist area.

The riposo reshapes errands, not just meals

  • Midday closure: in small towns especially, shops and offices commonly close for a few hours in early afternoon (riposo/pausa pranzo); plan errands, bank visits and Comune paperwork around it, not around a US-style continuous business day.
  • Dinner: culturally runs 8-9:30pm, later than the US habit; restaurants barely fill up before 8, which reshapes evening socializing more than people expect going in.

What's easy to find, and what isn't

  • Easy: excellent fresh produce, cheese, bread and olive oil, arguably better quality than the US equivalent at a similar price.
  • Harder: specific American breakfast cereals, certain condiments, and a subset of OTC medications; these need a specialty import shop or accepting a brand switch.
