The 2026 income threshold by household: €920 a month for a single applicant, €1,380 for a couple, €1,656 for a couple with one child. The 12-month financial resources requirement, roughly €11,040 single and €16,560 for a couple, including where the official checklist says that money has to be available. The three accepted paths to prove accommodation, not just the two most guides mention. And the correction that matters most if citizenship is part of your plan: 10 years of residency now required for Americans, not 5, as of May 19, 2026.

The concession almost nobody mentions
Means of support can be reduced by half when you prove accommodation is secured, and by up to 90 percent when food is also demonstrably secured.
It sits on the same government checklist as the requirement itself, and we found no other guide to this visa that mentions it. If you have already signed the 12-month lease the course covers, you may be closer to the threshold than the headline number suggests.
What we cannot tell you is how consistently individual consulates apply it, and we did not find that documented anywhere. Bring the lease, and ask.

This is for you if you have already narrowed your decision to Portugal and the D7 specifically, and you want the real numbers, the real paperwork and the real filing sequence before you pay a lawyer or a relocation consultant to walk you through it.

The income thresholds, the household math, the 12-month resources requirement and its legal basis, the 60 to 90 day consulate decision window, and the citizenship residency change are all verified directly against Portugal’s official visa portal, its published law, or the official document checklists issued by Portuguese consulates.
A handful of numbers, the D7 filing fee among them, come from a single advisory source we could not independently corroborate. We say so in the lesson itself, not in a footnote, because a number you cannot fully verify is still useful as long as you know it is an estimate and not a rule.
One distinction we keep deliberately separate, because it changes your planning: the official checklist asks for a document proving your income is available in national territory, meaning in Portugal. Advisors who process these applications describe satisfying that with a Portuguese bank account. The first is what the government document says. The second is how the people who file these describe meeting it. We could not find an official document that names a bank account specifically, so we do not merge the two.
The completion certificate confirms that you went through this course and passed the review exam. It is not a legal, governmental or immigration credential, and it does not replace a lawyer if your situation is complicated.
